Oscilloscopes
The oscilloscope is the central instrument in any electronic test chain. It displays voltage as a function of time and characterises signal dynamics: amplitude, frequency, jitter, distortion or noise. Modern models offer bandwidths from 70 MHz to over 20 GHz, with sampling speeds in excess of 20 GS/s and acquisition memories in excess of 100 Mpts. In R&D, the oscilloscope is used to analyse fast transitions, rising edges, ground bounce and phase shifts between channels. In production, it checks tolerances and validates the functional margins of circuits. In maintenance, it identifies transient faults and power supply instabilities. FFT, serial bus decoding (CAN, SPI, UART, I²C), eye diagram and power measurement functions extend its use to embedded and power electronics. Connected via LAN, USB, GPIB or SCPI, it can be integrated into automated test benches for IEC 61010 and ISO 17025 qualification.
A universal instrument, the oscilloscope remains the benchmark for observing, understanding and improving the reliability of electronic signal behaviour.

practical questions about oscilloscopes
01
O1. What are the technical criteria for comparing two oscilloscopes?Bandwidth, number of channels, sampling frequency, memory depth and compatibility with digital protocols are essential. These parameters determine the accuracy and relevance of measurements in a given context.
02
Is a reconditioned oscilloscope suitable for R&D use?Yes, provided it has been checked according to rigorous metrology procedures. A top-of-the-range reconditioned device can offer the same performance as a new model at a much lower cost.
03
What's the difference between an analogue and a digital oscilloscope?Analogue displays a continuous signal, while digital converts the signal into discrete data. Today's digital models incorporate advanced analysis, storage and processing functions, making them dominant in industrial use.
04
What does the bandwidth of an oscilloscope mean? This is the frequency range that the instrument can measure without significant attenuation. It must be at least five times higher than the maximum frequency of the observed signal to guarantee a faithful measurement.
05
Should I choose an oscilloscope with a passive or active probe? This depends on the application. Active probes offer better bandwidth and less load on the circuit being measured, making them ideal for high-frequency or sensitive signals. Passive probes are suitable for standard measurements.
