Spectrum analysers
Spectrum analysers display the frequency distribution of a signal and quantify its power level in a given band. They measure amplitude, phase noise, harmonics and parasitic emissions in ranges from a few hertz to 50 GHz, or even 110 GHz with millimetre extensions. The useful dynamic range typically extends from -150 dBm to +30 dBm, with band resolutions (RBW) of between 1 Hz and 3 MHz depending on the selectivity required. In R&D, these instruments characterise amplifiers, oscillators, filters or modulators. In EMC, they detect conducted and radiated emissions in compliance with CISPR 16 and EN 55032 standards. In production, they check the spectral compliance of RF or wireless modules. Real-time FFT models detect transient events and capture intermittent interference over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE or 5G links. Equipped with LAN, USB and SCPI interfaces, they can be easily integrated into automated test benches and provide full metrological traceability.
The benchmark for RF engineers, the spectrum analyser structures the control of noise, power and frequency purity.

Frequently asked questions about Spectrum analysers
01
What is a spectrum analyser used for?It displays the frequency distribution of a signal, showing its power as a function of frequency. It is essential for analysing RF emissions, diagnosing interference or validating wireless transmissions.
02
What's the difference between a spectrum analyser and an oscilloscope? The oscilloscope shows a signal in the time domain, the spectrum analyser in the frequency domain. The latter is better suited to studying RF signals, EMC disturbances or emission spectra.
03
What are the technical criteria to be compared? The analysable frequency band, resolution bandwidth (RBW), amplitude accuracy, scanning speed, background noise level and measurement functions (EMI, demodulation, real-time analysis) are key.
04
Is a portable analyser enough for a field EMC audit?Yes, as long as it covers the target frequency band and has a preamp, an appropriate RBW filter and, ideally, a peak or quasi-peak detection mode. It must also be compatible with suitable antennas or probes.
05
Are refurbished spectrum analysers always up to date? This depends on the model and its use. If they are metrologically checked and include the necessary options (preamp, filters, firmware updates), they remain perfectly usable even in demanding use.
