Vector network analysers
Vector network analysers measure S parameters (S11, S21, S12, S22) to characterise the frequency, phase and impedance response of RF and microwave components. They can be used to assess insertion loss, reflection, mismatch and coupling in ranges extending from 9 kHz to 67 GHz, and even 120 GHz with millimetre extensions. In R&D, they are used to develop filters, amplifiers, duplexers and antennas, while in production, they validate the conformity of microwave sub-assemblies. Two-, four- or eight-port architectures ensure accurate differential measurements, with systematic errors corrected by SOLT, TRL or ECal calibration. In metrology, they guarantee traceability of amplitude and phase measurements to ISO 17025. Modern models include TDR time analysis, Smith Chart display and inverse frequency-time conversion. Connected via LAN, USB or GPIB, they can be integrated into automated test benches for complete characterisation of passive or active networks.
A fundamental RF tool, the VNA establishes the link between design, modelling and actual measurement.

concrete questions about Vector network analysers
01
What is the purpose of a vector network analyser? It measures the S parameters (S11, S21, etc.) of an RF component or system, to characterise reflection, transmission, impedance matching or losses. It is a central tool in RF or microwave design and validation.
02
What's the difference with a spectrum analyser? The spectrum analyser observes the amplitude of an existing signal, while the VNA injects a reference signal and analyses how it is modified by the device under test. The VNA measures amplitude and phase, enabling complete modelling.
03
What components can be tested with a VNA?Filters, antennas, amplifiers, duplexers, cables, connectors, RF printed circuits, adapters, etc. It is also used for antenna adjustment or reflection coefficient measurement (VSWR).
04
What are the critical options to watch out for?The frequency range, number of ports (2, 4...), dynamic range, phase and amplitude accuracy, scanning speed, and the presence of automatic calibrations or calibration kits adapted to the connectors used.
05
Are reconditioned VNAs reliable for RF validation?Yes, if the linearity, stability and measurement performance have been validated in metrology. Some previous generation VNAs are still technically very competitive, especially for ranges < 8 GHz or non-critical benches.
